The Concrete Soul of Yerevan: A Soviet Modernist Walk with a Contemporary Artist

Look beyond the pink city postcards and
discover the monumental, often misunderstood, soul of Yerevan. Join me, a local
contemporary artist, on an intimate walking tour through the city’s powerful
Soviet Modernist landscapes. We’ll move beyond textbook history to uncover the
artistic vision, utopian dreams, and human stories set in concrete and stone.
This is a chance to see Yerevan not just as a tourist, but through the eyes of
an artist who calls its unique public spaces home.
About
Your Guide:
I am a
contemporary artist based in Yerevan, with over 30 years of experience as a curator,
artist, and theorist. My work focuses on public spaces and modernism,
and I’ve had the privilege of showcasing my art in international exhibitions,
including the Venice Biennale. My pieces are featured in prestigious
museums such as the Contemporary Art Museum in Turin, Italy.
Yerevan isn’t
just my home; it’s a place I’m deeply connected to and constantly explore. In
my tours, I aim to share a unique perspective on the city—one that combines its
historical heritage with its modern identity. Whether you’re an artist, an
architecture enthusiast, or a curious traveler, I’ll guide you through
Yerevan’s hidden gems, cultural landmarks, and vibrant streets. Let’s
rediscover the city together!
In this tour, I don’t just guide you to landmarks; I invite you
into my personal and professional world, sharing insights that bridge the gap
between historical fact, artistic interpretation, and the city’s living,
breathing identity.
What You’ll Explore:

We’ll start by unpacking Alexander Tamanian’s master “General
Plan” for Yerevan. How did this ambitious early-Soviet vision set the

architecture. We will discuss their design, the stories behind their
creation, and their place in Yerevan today. Potential sites include: Cascade Complex, Chamber
Music House, Building 9 at
Politechnical Institute, Constructivists buildings on
Tpagrichner street or the Cinema Rossiya. - The Art of the Everyday: Discover how grand architectural ideas filter down
into the daily lives of Yerevan’s residents. We’ll explore hidden
courtyards, public art installations, and the subtle design elements that
define the city’s rhythm. - From Utopia to Today:
